The danger of car accidents caused by drunk drivers

This past Labor Day weekend was a good example of a time when family and friends get together to spend time together, catch up with each other and, generally, just have a good time. For many, including thousands of Texas residents, the good times includes drinking alcohol. While drinking alcohol doesn't always lead to problems, it certainly can when an intoxicated person gets behind the wheel of a vehicle.

The danger of car accidents caused by drunk drivers in America was made clear in a recent article. According to the article, the good news is that, overall, the number of arrests for driving under the influence throughout the country has been on the decline in recent years. Citing data collected by the National Traffic Highway Safety Administration, over the last 30 years the number of DUI arrests has decreased by one-third. However, there was bad news as well: despite the decrease in DUI arrests, there are still nearly 30 deaths per day in America that are caused by drunk driving. That is a staggering amount.

Austin, in particular, was noted in the recent article. According to the statistics, almost 2 percent of the drivers on the roads have been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. That is 20 percent higher than the national average. In a city with a population over 950,000, the recent report noted that a reported 18 percent of people drink alcohol excessively. And, of the total number of traffic fatalities in Austin, an estimated 18 percent involved alcohol use.

The danger of drunk drivers on the roads is clear. Anyone who has been injured in a car accident that was caused by a drunk driver will likely benefit from getting more information about their legal options.
