Former NFL player killed in motorcycle accident

A recent motorcycle accident that ended with at least one vehicle in flames has killed both a former University of Texas football star and his passenger dead. Authorities said both the football player and another woman died at the scene of the accident.

The accident happened on a weekend night at around 10:30 p.m. on a street in Northwest Austin.

The player had a prolific career with the Longhorns, such that his death attracted national media attention and the condolences of many people affiliated with the famous college football program. The man also played in the NLF for the Chicago Bears. He was in his mid-30s.

The accident took place at an intersection and also involved a minivan that was pulling out of a subdivision on to the main road. Reportedly, the occupants of the minivan were not injured seriously. Police had to close the road for several hours as they conducted their initial investigation of the accident. They gave no indication as to whether they had determined fault.

Still, motorcycle accidents frequently happen at intersections. Because they are hard to see naturally, drivers may oftentimes miss the fact that a motorcycle is approaching and pull right out in front of a bike. In some cases, this happens because a driver is not paying a lookout for motorcycles or is simply distracted. In other cases, a driver may misgauge the speed of an approaching bike when pulling out.

While the details of this accident will no doubt come out as investigation continues, the families of the two victims will likely want to start evaluating their legal options to pursue compensation. They will, after all, no doubt have medical bills and other expenses to pay.
