4 ways to keep your family safe while visiting a public pool

Spending a day at the public pool can be a fun-filled family activity, especially during the warm summer months. The laughter and joy of splashing in the water create cherished memories. However, public pools can also pose safety risks if certain precautions are not taken.

Keeping your family safe at the public pool requires vigilance and adherence to safety rules. By following a few simple guidelines, you can ensure a fun and accident-free day for your family.

1. Maintain constant supervision

Regardless of your children’s swimming abilities, you must supervise them at all times when they are in or near the water. Drowning can happen quickly and quietly, so constant vigilance is necessary.

If your child is a beginner swimmer, stay within arm’s length to provide immediate help if needed.

2. Encourage safe behavior

Teach your children about safe behavior around the pool. They should walk, not run, on the pool deck to avoid slipping. They should also avoid pushing or jumping on others in the pool. Remind them to always enter the water feet first unless the area is specifically for diving.

3. Use appropriate flotation devices

If your child is not a confident swimmer, using a life jacket approved by the U.S. Coast Guard provides an extra layer of safety. Avoid relying on inflatables or noodles, as these do not keep swimmers safe in all situations.

4. Learn basic water safety skills

Ensure that your family knows basic water safety skills. This includes learning how to float, tread water and exit the pool safely.

A day at the public pool should be about enjoyment and relaxation. By following these steps you can help ensure everyone’s safety.
