It is important for drivers to understand the proper steps to take following a car accident for many reasons. Remembering these steps can help people stay calm after they have been in an accident.

For those people involved in a car accident, failure to take these steps may result in civil penalties and jail time.

What to do after a vehicular accident

The Texas Transportation Code is very clear about drivers’ responsibilities following a car accident. For any accident where a driver suspects there may be an injury or fatality, the following steps are mandatory:

  1. The driver must stop his or her vehicle as close to the scene of the accident as possible, but also out of the way of danger.
  2. If the driver is unable to safely stop at the scene of the accident, he or she must return to the scene immediately afterward.
  3. The driver must assess whether a person is in the other vehicle and if that person needs medical attention.
  4. The driver cannot leave the scene of the accident until the property authorities dismiss him or her.

Following an accident, if someone in the other vehicle sustains an injury, it is vital to call 911 immediately.

What to do after a hit-and-run

Unfortunately, some people flee the scene of an accident instead of performing the steps above. In this case, drivers should assess their situation and determine if they have sustained injuries. If necessary, they should call 911 for medical attention, then the local police. Any information about the vehicle that fled the scene can help police find the driver.

The Texas Drivers’ Manual advises drivers involved in hit-and-run accidents to law enforcement for examination and compensation.
