What are signs of a TBI?

A hit to the head may leave you with more than just a bump and bruise to deal with later. If you take a hard enough hit, you risk suffering from brain injury. In particular, traumatic brain injury has the highest chance of causing you long-term damage.

It is thus important for you to recognize the signs of these injuries. That way, you can seek proper medical assistance as soon as possible.

Behavioral and mental signs

Mayo Clinic discusses potential signs of traumatic brain injury. The effects manifest in several different ways. Experts often divide them into behavioral, physical and mental categories.

For behavioral issues, victims often feel agitated, overwhelmed and confused. This can result in the victim lashing out at others. They may deny needing medical assistance. They could get angry with people who insist they seek medical help anyway.

Mental issues often tie to behavioral ones. As mentioned, the confusion and agitation directly impact behavior. It is also common for victims to suffer from memory loss or damage, especially in the short term. On top of that, they may experience disorders of consciousness. This includes passing out, blacking out or falling into a coma.

Physical symptoms

Physical signs often get attention the fastest because they are most noticeable. This may include vomiting, nausea, dizziness, and headaches that get worse with time. Severe cases also result in clear fluid leaking from the nose or ears. The victim might also have unevenly dilated pupils.

If you notice a head injury victim suffering from any of these symptoms, seek immediate medical help. This could save their life.
