If you suffered a burn injury, you may have to undergo extensive treatment and management for the pain. Burns can happen for various reasons, including hot objects, electricity, friction, radiation and chemicals. Many people suffer injuries after motor vehicle accidents, kitchen accidents and fires.

According to WebMD, there are three types of burns: first-degree, second-degree and third-degree. Second and third-degree can cause pain, blistering, swelling and may affect deep tissues.

How can you treat burn injuries?

There are a variety of ways to treat burn injuries. For second-degree burns, you may use antibiotic cream or ointment. For third-degree burns, however, you may require IV antibiotics and IV fluids. When you experience severe burns, you lose fluid and the open wound creates the perfect environment for infection. The doctor needs to keep the wound clean and protected against bacteria. In some cases, you may need to undergo surgery. Doctors may take synthetic skin or skin from other areas of your body to repair the wound in a treatment known as skin grafting.

How can you manage burn pain?

Burn pain can be difficult to treat and control. Burns sometimes result in severe pain that lasts for a long time. Given how the pain may change, your treatment may also change over time. You have to undergo cleanings and bandage changes regularly, which can irritate the wound. When over-the-counter pain medication does not work, you may need muscle relaxants or steroid injections.

Major burns require immediate attention and treatment. Without treatment, the burns can develop complications, such as infection, tetanus and bone or tendon problems.
